It does make changes but the changes work to the benefit of the film. It knows what makes the novel special and what to bring and what not to bring to the screen. One of the things I really love is that this movie imo is the gold standard in how to do an adaptation of a novel. Every scene and setpiece flows together like magic. Everything about this works and synergizes together into something special. One of Alfonso Cuaron's finest films and one of the best of the 00s and 04.

Like, it almost doesn't even feel like the same franchise.Ĭoming back to this thread PRISONER OF AZKABANĪfter all these years this movie is still incredible. OotP still has a bit of that too, but then the series gets ultra dark from HBP onwards.

I feel like there was still a nice balance between the darker side of things and the more whimsical stuff in those two. Even PoA and GoF don't bother me as much even though they're much darker than the first two. I can appreciate the darker tone of those movies because it suits the progression of the storyline in the books, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't make me miss the more charming atmosphere of the earlier films. *shrug*Īnd as much as I can say the Yates films are good movies in their own right, whenever I watch them, I just can't shake the feeling that something is missing. Maybe it's a slight downgrade in quality coming after the fantastic Prisoner of Azkaban, but idk. I don't know if I'm just crazy or what, but I just can't help but enjoy that one. One thing that kinda bothers me is the hate that Goblet of Fire receives. I remember being disappointed by HBP for whatever reason last year, so hopefully I'll warm up to it this time around. :pįinished watching OotP last night and will be moving on to HBP. I might just turn this into an annual thing at this point. I watched them for the first time last year in December and I'm doing it again this year. It lacks the youthful charm of the first 2 Columbus films, and it completely avoids the creepy darkness of Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban (which is the BEST).įunny coincidence because I'm currently watching the movies for the second time. I think Goblet of Fire is the WORST HP film (even though I still enjoy it, and like it) because the director Mike Newell didn't even read the book and wanted to make it like a Bollywood film. If I had to rank them from "Personal Favorite to Least Favorite" it would be : If I had to rank them from "best to worst" like a critic, it would be : "Personal Favorite to Least Favorite" based on my own biases because I grew up with the films and experienced them at different ages of my life, favoring some more than others, having read the books multiple times each. "Best to Worst" based on technical aspects and narrative, like a Rotten Tomatoes critic stepping foot in a theater with no preference or bias, having only read the books. I enjoy every film for different reasons, but I would have to rank them 2 ways:
